How to get here: We are 7 miles off the A1 and have rail and bus connections to Thirsk. We are one mile from Thirsk Railway Station which is on the Grand Central line direct from Kings Cross and from Sunderland. Trains also come direct from Manchester and York. Coaches come into Thirsk Market Place.
Nearest Town: Thirsk is near Ripon, York and Northallerton.
Local Area
Thirsk is a small town in lovely countryside. It has many cafes and restaurants and interesting places to visit, including art galleries and museums such as the James Herriot museum. The charity shops are well stocked. There are local supermarkets within a 10 minute walk from Holy Rood House. The leisure centre is a 5 minute walk away with swimming pool and gym and a children’s well-equipped park.
You will find Holy Rood House is an oasis, yet just 5 minutes walk to the cinema, swimming-pool, river walks and bustling market town of Thirsk, known well for it’s James Herriot connections ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. Juliet House, next door, part of Holy Rood House, was the home of Miss Warner alias ‘Mrs Pumphrey and Tricki-Woo’.
Just 5 miles away is Sutton Bank and The White Horse both on the Cleveland Way. The village of Sowerby, within which we are located, is a treat to walk through whatever the season. The ‘Crown and Anchor’ in the village provides excellent food, as the fish n chips just round the corner has won numerous prizes. Holy Rood House looks out onto the lovely Sowerby Flatts and river and out to the Hambledon Hills.
Holy Rood house has a lovely river running nearby and many local walks. It is by the Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales for many places to explore. There are many ancient ruins of churches and castles and the interesting city of York nearby.
Facilities
Holy Rood House is a wonderful venue for holidays for individuals, families and groups. There are 15 bedrooms, which can sleep 22 if a group wishes to book. There is a ground floor access suite and a stair lift to the first floor to a further 7 bedrooms. Many of the bedrooms are en-suite. Bedding and towels provided.
We provide more cosy arrangements for individuals, couples and small families – self- catering facilities including microwave, cooker, crockery and cutlery. Children enjoy the space, and there are jigsaws and games. Included on the first floor is a small sitting room with a TV and books. Wi-fi is provided.
The lounge and dining room accommodate up to 20 people. An electric piano is available in the lounge.
Our creative gardens include a labyrinth and small chapel, orchard, herb and pond-garden, and our flock of chickens, two goats and Thomas the Tortoise.
The last two weeks of August are always available for self-catering holidays. Also a few days at the beginning of each New Year, and a few days following Easter Bank Holiday Monday. There are occasional other times made possible within our annual programme. Many people also come for a fully catered holiday during the year. This would be for adults only.
There is ample parking at our two properties next door to each other.

Availability
Holy Rood House is available for self-catering at short periods of the year – for 5 days after our Easter retreat, for 2 weeks at the end of August, and a few days around Christmas and the New Year.
