Smelter’s Rest and the Count House form part of the historic grade II listed former tin smelting works situated at Weir Quay, Bere Alston, Yealverton, Devon. PL20 7BT.

How to get there:

You can get to us via the following means:

Road.

Rail:  local train stations are Bere Alston (1.5 miles away) or Bere Ferrers (2 miles away).

Or even by boat via Plymouth and the River Tamar. There is a boatyard and public slip and deep water moorings available near Weir Quay (200 yards down the road from us).

Nearest Towns:

Tavistock 16 mins away. Plymouth approx 30 mins by car or via train from Bere Alston/Bere Ferrers.  Plymouth is approx 35 min by car or 25 to 30 min via rail from Bere Alston/FerrersPage


Local Area

We are in AONB. Smelters Rest is part of a World Heritage Site – ‘The Tamar Union Smelting Works’

The River Tamar is 200 yards down the road from us which offers a local boatyard, cafe and public slipway. Weir Quay Hub Club is home to the Weir Quay Sailing club offering cruising and dinghy sailing events and activities plus home to the Tamar & Tavy gig club.

There are a wide variety of walks from the property or join the Tamara Way. Dartmoor National Park is 10 mins drive.

Bere Ferrers has a railway station heritage centre and The Plough Inn.

Superb fishing on The River Tamar and River Tavy – Day or weekly permits via Tavy Walkham & Plym Fishing Club or Endsleigh Fishing Club.

Historic Morwellham Quay 10 mins drive with it’s own cafe and The Ship pub and the opportunity to experience a rail trip down the mine and learn more about the history of the mining community.

Calstock can be visited via road or the special Tamar Valley Line scenic train service. From Calstock there is a footpath to Cotehele National Trust property with it’s pretty gardens, house, quay and mill plus extensive walks. (Or drive there!)

Buckland Abbey National Trust, 10 mins by car.
Local convenience stores, butcher, post office, takeaway, pharmacy and pub in Bere Alston. Tavistock offers a wide range of shops and supermarkets.

 

Facilities

Smelters Rest offers a double bedroom(with some height restriction), shower room and an open plan kitchen living area. Cooker, microwave, fridge. Airfryer. Internet/WiFi. Smart TV and electric heating.

Outside is a lovely terraced area to sit out on. Plenty of parking spaces on site.

Bedding and towels provided.

Although Smelter’s Rest is all on one level, due to the nature and age of the building, it unfortunately has restricted access for persons with limited mobility (maximum door access width is 750 mm).

Fresh eggs can be supplied from our chickens.

Availability

Available all year round.

Arrival and Departure times:   Arrival between 3 pm and 9 pm. Departure before 12 noon. There is a key safe. Combination number to be texted/emailed on day of arrival.

Booking arrangements:   Full week: Friday night to Thursday night. Weekend break: Friday night to
Sunday night. Mid week break: Monday night to Thursday night

Pets: One small well behaved pet welcome, £5 per night
