Christian Holiday Cabin, Ayrshire — On Auchencloigh Farm
This wonderful Christian holiday cabin, Ayrshire, sits on Auchencloigh Farm just outside Kilbirnie, with its own private garden, tree-lined avenue and a genuinely restful, home-from-home feel. Inside, an open-plan living, kitchen and dining space sits under a vaulted ceiling, with a king-size bedroom and a sofa that cleverly converts for extra sleeping space when needed. Step outside to a covered seating area with a wood-fired heater, mirror chimes and an adult swing — the kind of spot that’s easy to lose an evening in. The farm’s own Chocolate & Ice Cream shop is just a few steps from the door, which is no bad thing at all.
Kilbirnie itself has a longer Christian history than its size might suggest. The town takes its name from the Gaelic for “Church of St Brendan”, and its parish church, known locally as the Auld Kirk, stands on the site of a 6th-century monastic cell — one of the oldest church sites in Scotland still associated with continuous Christian worship. The present building dates largely from the 15th century, with later aisles added by the local Cunninghame and Crawfurd families, and it’s well worth a quiet look if you’re passing.
A couple of miles north, reached by a pleasant walk along the River Garnock, are the ruins of Glengarnock Castle — a 15th-century stronghold perched dramatically above the river, once visited by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1563. The castle fell out of use by the 18th century and has been slowly crumbling ever since, but enough survives to make the walk worthwhile.
Kilbirnie and neighbouring Glengarnock also carry real industrial weight in their history. From 1841 until its closure in 1985, the Glengarnock Iron and later Steel Works stood on the shores of Kilbirnie Loch, at one point among the largest employers in the Garnock Valley and exporting rails, girders and sections around the world. The loch itself, once used to dump the works’ waste water, has since recovered and is now a nature conservation site looked after by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.
Largs itself, the small coastal town already on your route to the islands, has its own dramatic history. It was here in October 1263 that a Norwegian invasion fleet of well over a hundred longships, sent by King Haakon IV, was wrecked by an autumn storm and fought off by the forces of Alexander III — a battle now generally reckoned to mark the effective end of the Viking Age in Britain. It’s remembered locally with a monument and an annual festival, and it’s as good an excuse as any for a wander along the front before or after the ferry.
The short ferry crossing on from Largs to the Isle of Cumbrae leads to one more unexpected gem: Britain’s smallest working cathedral. Tucked among trees just outside Millport, the Cathedral of The Isles seats barely a hundred people, yet its spire rises higher than the building is long, giving it a surprising sense of scale as you approach along the tree-lined path. Built in 1851 and consecrated as a cathedral in 1876, it’s a genuinely peaceful spot for quiet reflection, a world away from Millport’s busier seafront just a few hundred yards away.

Coming by car is essential, our farm entrance is located on the A760 Kilbirnie to Largs Road. The nearest train station is Glengarnock which is 3 miles away from the farm.
Nearest Town:
Kilbirnie is 1 mile away, Largs 6 miles away with both Glasgow and Ayr being 25 miles from the farm.
Local Area
The Cabin is only a few steps away from our specialist Chocolate & Ice Cream shop, the local supermarket is 1.5 miles away, nearest farm shop is 4 miles and a smokehouse and seafood restaurant are 11 miles away.
Clyde Muirsheil Regional Park is on our doorstep where you can enjoy walking, cycling and other outdoor activities. Largs is a small coastal town 6 miles from the Cabin where you can take a day trip to the Island of Cumbrae. The Islands of Arran and Rothesay are also great destinations to explore and can be easily reached by a short car journey/sail. Further afield, a 40 min car journey can take you to Loch Lomond or spend a day exploring Culzean Castle, Dumfries House or the Robert Burns Museum – all amazing assets in Ayrshire.
Facilities
The accommodation which sleeps 4 has a real ‘home from home’ feel which includes a spacious bright open-plan living, kitchen (full size), and dining area with a vaulted ceiling. The sofa cleverly converts into 2 adult size single bunk-beds (not suitable for children under 7 years of age) making the sleeping arrangements more flexible. The bedroom has a king size double bed, open wardrobe, chest of drawers and a full-length mirror. Bathroom has a walk-in rain shower, WC, sink and heated towel rail. There is a separate communal utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer.
The Cabin has its own private Garden area, Private Parking and Tree Lined Avenue (Not suitable for children under 6 as the garden is not securely fenced.). There is a covered seating area with a Wood Fired Heater/BBQ, Mirror Chimes and Adult Swing.
