The Bungalow sits within the grounds of Sizewell Hall Christian Conference Centre, on a quiet stretch of the Suffolk coast where the garden runs almost to the sea. A flight of steps leads straight from the grounds down onto Sizewell beach, so this Christian holiday bungalow, Suffolk, offers something rare among self-catering lets: proper barefoot-on-the-shingle beach access, with no car park or coastal path to navigate first thing in the morning. Sizewell itself is little more than a fishing hamlet, a scatter of clinker-boarded huts, a café, and boats pulled up on the shingle, which makes it a gently unhurried spot to begin or end a day, whether that’s a bracing walk before breakfast or watching the light change over the water in the evening.

From the beach, the Suffolk Coast Path runs both ways. Head north and it’s a level two-mile walk along the shingle to RSPB Minsmere, one of the best-loved nature reserves in the country, reachable entirely on foot without needing to touch a road. Head south instead and a gentler cliff-top path leads towards Thorpeness, around forty-five minutes at an easy pace, with a café at the far end for those who fancy making a morning of it. Both routes are flat, well-used, and forgiving for anyone wanting fresh air without a strenuous hike, ideal after a long ministry year, when the body wants rest as much as the mind does.

Minsmere’s story reaches back further than its birdlife. The reserve now covers the original site of Leiston Abbey, founded in 1182 by Ranulf de Glanville, Chief Justiciar to Henry II, for a community of Premonstratensian canons. Built on a low island in the marsh, the abbey endured two centuries of flooding and encroaching tides before the canons finally gave up the site in 1363, dismantling their buildings stone by stone and rebuilding a few miles inland at what is now the better-known Leiston Abbey ruins. A small chapel was raised on the old foundations and used for worship until the Reformation; its walls still stand today, quietly incorporated into a Second World War pillbox built to watch the coast. It’s a striking place to pause on a walk, a reminder that people have been seeking out this stretch of shoreline, for prayer as much as for peace, for the best part of nine hundred years.

The reserve itself, established in 1947 and designated a Ramsar wetland alongside neighbouring Walberswick in 1976, is a genuine haven for wildlife. Its reedbeds and lagoons are home to bitterns, avocets, and marsh harriers, while otters slip through the water channels and, out on the heath, adders and silver-studded blue butterflies share the sandy paths with grazing ponies. Eight bird hides and a network of easy trails make it a rewarding place to explore slowly, with binoculars or without, and the visitor centre café is a welcome stop for tea and cake partway round.

Inland, Leiston, Saxmundham, and Aldeburgh are all within a few miles for shops, a pharmacy, or a proper fish and chip supper, while the wider East of England offers plenty more to explore for those staying longer. But much of the appeal of The Bungalow is simply not needing to go anywhere at all: with the sea a few steps from the door and RSPB Minsmere within easy walking reach, it’s a place built for slowing down.

The Bungalow is our most recently renovated self-catered accommodation here at Sizewell Hall. The property benefits from fantastic access to the beach, with stairs leading from the grounds directly to the beach and coastal paths. The peaceful grounds and coastal surroundings offer the perfect environment for a restful break.

There is one double bedroom and one twin room with two single beds. The accommodation has a bathroom/toilet with a walk-in shower. The kitchen has cooker, microwave and fridge and is equipped with all utensils. There is a dining area with dining table and a separate lounge with DVD player and Freeview TV. The property is fully centrally heated. Free WIFI is Available. We supply all bed linen; however guests will need to bring their own towels.
