A record from 1291 names the church as “Ecclesia de Villa Galfri” — literally “the church of Geoffrey’s village” — confirming that the settlement grew up around, and was named for, its church of St Jeffrey and St Oswald. The pairing of two dedications, one to a shadowy local “St Jeffrey” and one to the far better-documented St Oswald, King and martyr of Northumbria, hints at a foundation story now largely lost to time. The circular shape of the churchyard is itself a telling clue: in Wales, a round churchyard is one of the classic markers of a very early Christian foundation, often pre-dating the Norman conquest by centuries and sometimes echoing even older, pre-Christian sacred sites.

That early history is backed up by physical evidence still preserved in the church porch: an incised stone cross, carved sometime between the 8th and 9th centuries and possibly as early as 600 AD, discovered set into the porch floor in 1915 and later moved to a safer position against the porch wall. It’s one of the oldest tangible pieces of Christian history in this corner of Pembrokeshire, quietly surviving in the same small village where Nyth Fach Cottage now offers guests a place to rest. The present church building is largely 12th to 15th century, having been rebuilt and extended in phases over several hundred years, and once belonged to the Priory of Pembroke before being transferred, in the 1330s, to the canons of St David’s Cathedral — placing this small parish church under the authority of Wales’s own patron saint’s cathedral for centuries afterwards.

Cwtch – Bedroom 2 is a cosy double bedroom, equipped with a compact double bed, under bed storage, and bedside cabinets. Sleeps 1 – 2.
