Location

This charming Christian holiday gîte, Dordogne, is actually four of them — Au Coin Des Arbres is a hamlet of beautifully restored former farm buildings just outside the village of Biron, each gîte fully self-contained with its own private terrace, and a shared 14-metre pool and covered communal space for evenings together. Book a single gîte for a quiet couple’s break, or take the whole hamlet exclusively for up to eighteen guests — Genévrier and Laurier even connect internally via their own door, making them a natural choice for two families travelling together. Walks lead straight out from the door into the surrounding countryside, and Nick and Rachel live discreetly on-site with their two small dogs, on hand if you need them but happy to leave you in complete peace throughout your stay.

Biron itself, just two kilometres down the road, is one of the Dordogne’s quiet treasures. Its castle, Château de Biron, was the seat of the Gontaut-Biron family for around eight centuries and is one of the historic Four Baronies of Périgord — a genuinely striking mix of a 12th-century keep, a two-storey Renaissance chapel, and 18th-century staterooms, all built up in layers as each generation added their own mark over time. The castle had its share of drama too: it was seized in 1211 during the fighting between the Catholic Church and the Cathars, a persecuted Christian community that had taken refuge across this part of southern France, and it changed hands more than once during the Hundred Years’ War that followed. The Dordogne department bought the castle in 1978 and it’s been open to visitors ever since, with its vaulted kitchens and great hall still very much intact.

Monpazier, one of the bastide towns already on your doorstep, has its own remarkable story. It was founded in 1284 by Edward I of England — the same king remembered in Braveheart — as part of a network of fortified new towns built to secure English-held Aquitaine during a turbulent century of Anglo-French rivalry. Extraordinarily, its grid of streets, arcaded square and 13th-century covered market hall survive almost exactly as they were laid out more than 700 years ago, which is why it’s still regularly named one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Cahors, another of the towns already within easy reach, has one of the most unusual cathedrals in France. Its twin domes, each over thirty metres wide, were built in a Byzantine style more commonly associated with Constantinople than rural France, and one still carries its original 14th-century frescoes. The cathedral has long been a stop on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, and its later Gothic cloister, added a couple of centuries afterwards in a much more delicate style, is well worth the short detour on its own. The town itself, wrapped on three sides by a bend in the Lot, is worth a slow wander in its own right, with a fortified medieval bridge, the Pont Valentré, still standing guard over the river.

How to get there:

A car is important during your visit because we are in rural France with very limited public transport. If you come by rail or air you can easily hire cars for the duration of your stay.

Rail is easy via Paris to Bordeaux (2 hours) then local train to Bergerac (1 hour)

Bergerac Airport (40 minutes by car), Bordeaux Airport and Toulouse Airport (2 hours by car)

Ferry/Tunnel to Calais and then 10 hours by car (recommended stopover around Chartres or Orleans)

Ferry to St Malo and then 6 hours by car

Set in a beautiful and peaceful location, our renovated Dordgone farm has walks from the door. We are 2km from Biron with an Auberge and small shop. Monpazier and Villereal have many excellent restaurants, bars and supermarkets with very old market squares and historic buildings. Bergerac and Sarlat have larger hyper-markets

There is something for everyone. Dozens of medieval castles and historic towns, great locally produced food, activities such as walking, cycling, canoeing along the Dordogne, Vezere and Lot rivers, vineyard tours and wine tastings in both the Bergerac and Lot valleys, pre-historic caves and museums, fresh food markets, antiques and flea markets.

Costs

Charges range from €109 to €195 per night between low and high season (including bed linen, towels, pool towels, utilities) with Tourist and waste tax charged separately. July and August 7 nights minimum with Saturday change-over. At other times of the year arrival and departure days are flexible with three night minimum stay.

Availability

Genévrier and Laurier are available all year round.
Noyer and Palmier are available from Easter to the end of October.

Arrival and Departure times:

Arrival between 16.00h and 19.00h. Gites must be vacated by 10.00am on the day of departure.

Booking arrangements:

July, August and May half-term arrivals/departures on Saturday only and 7-night minimum stay. Other times, arrival and departure day flexible with 3 nights minimum.

Pets: Sorry – no pets.
