This wonderful Christian holiday house, Cairngorms, is a late Victorian granite home just outside Grantown-on-Spey, lovingly restored over six years by its owners and now offered out to like-minded families and friends while they themselves are away leading a Christian ministry elsewhere. Five en-suite rooms across three floors sleep ten or more, with two separate living rooms giving space for both quiet and noise at the same time, and a half-acre garden with its own fire pit and room for outdoor games. Whether you arrive on foot, by bicycle, or by canoe off the river, there’s a genuine richness of ways to explore once you’re here. The woodland opposite, managed by a local trust, brings red squirrels and deer right up to the garden edge, and the birdlife is a particular delight when a siskin flashes past.

Grantown-on-Spey itself has a genuinely interesting story. It was founded from scratch in 1765 by Sir James Grant, laid out as a planned Georgian town around a central square and wide High Street, at a time when Highland landowners were trying to create work and stability in the decades after the Jacobite risings. Robert Burns visited in 1787 and dined with the Grant family, and Queen Victoria came through in 1860 — the town has been welcoming visitors, in one way or another, for well over 250 years.

The Cairngorms National Park itself, right on the doorstep, is the largest national park in Britain — more than twice the size of the Lake District, and home to five of Scotland’s six highest mountains. Around a quarter of the UK’s rare and threatened wildlife lives within its boundaries, and nearly half the park is still classed as genuinely wild land, with barely a road running through its central heart.

One of the park’s more unexpected residents is its reindeer. Reindeer died out in Britain many centuries ago, but in 1952 a Swedish herder named Mikel Utsi reintroduced a small herd to the Cairngorms, having noticed how closely the mountains resembled his native Lapland. Around 150 reindeer now roam freely across the hills — Britain’s only such herd — and it’s still possible to walk among them with a guide from nearby Glenmore.

The Cairngorms are also home to some of the largest surviving fragments of the ancient Caledonian pine forest that once covered much of Scotland after the last Ice Age. In places like Rothiemurchus and Abernethy, not far from Grantown, some of the pines are several centuries old, and the forest floor and canopy together shelter species found almost nowhere else in Britain, including the Scottish crossbill and the elusive capercaillie.

The River Spey, which gives the town its name, runs close by too. It’s one of Scotland’s fastest-flowing rivers, and the valley it carves through — Speyside — is famous the world over for whisky, with more distilleries packed into this one stretch of glen than anywhere else in Scotland. Whether or not that’s your particular interest, the riverside paths and the wider Speyside Way make for some genuinely lovely walking.
