This charming Christian holiday cottage, Herefordshire, is a genuinely peaceful find — Wellspring Cottage sits within a small Christian retreat centre just outside Ledbury, on the southern edge of the Malvern Hills, with its own private entrance so you’re never intruding on the wider retreat spaces. Inside, a king-size bedroom with en-suite and a separate sofa bed in the lounge sleep up to three, and Joe and Cathy leave tea, coffee, milk and something sweet waiting for you on arrival. There are two private outdoor spaces exclusive to Cottage guests, plus the run of The Wellspring’s own gardens beyond — access is via three shallow steps through the garden terrace, each with a supporting handrail.

Ledbury itself, just a few minutes away, is one of Herefordshire’s prettiest market towns, first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Its most photographed corner is Church Lane, a cobbled alley of black-and-white timber-framed houses running from the 17th-century Market House up to the parish church of St Michael and All Angels — a church architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner once called the finest in the county, with a bell tower unusually built apart from the nave. Ledbury was also the birthplace of the poet John Masefield, later Poet Laureate, and the town still holds an annual poetry festival in his honour.

The Malvern Hills rising behind the retreat are older than almost anything else in England — the rock itself dates back some 680 million years to the Precambrian era, among the oldest exposed anywhere in the country. Their springs and panoramic ridge walks also shaped the music of Sir Edward Elgar, who composed much of his Enigma Variations while living nearby and cycling the lanes around Malvern for inspiration. At the foot of the hills, Great Malvern Priory has stood as a place of worship for close to a thousand years, founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1085 and now home to England’s largest surviving collection of 15th-century stained glass, alongside carved medieval misericords and the country’s biggest display of medieval floor and wall tiles.

Hereford Cathedral, a short drive south, holds more than just the Mappa Mundi. Its Chained Library is the largest surviving example in the world — around 1,500 books, each still fixed to its shelf by an original 17th-century chain and rod. Among them is the Hereford Gospels, a manuscript of the four Gospels made around the year 800, quite possibly in Wales, and thought to be the oldest complete book still held by the cathedral.

Closer to Ledbury, Eastnor Castle is a rather more recent — and more theatrical — piece of history. Despite its medieval appearance, it was actually built between 1810 and 1824 for the 2nd Baron Somers, designed by Robert Smirke to look like the genuine border fortresses that once guarded this stretch of the Welsh Marches. Smirke went on to design the British Museum, and much of Eastnor’s Gothic interior decoration was later added by Augustus Pugin, one of the architects behind the Houses of Parliament. Its deer park makes a lovely, easy walk on a fine day.
