Christian Holiday Cottage, Peak District — A Village Base in Youlgreave

Hopton Cottage is a genuine Christian holiday cottage, Peak District, break: a 250-year-old stone cottage with mullioned windows, right on the main street of Youlgreave, in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Sleeping five or six across four bedrooms, three with views over Bradford Dale, it makes a comfortable, well-equipped base for exploring the wider Christian holidays in the East Midlands and the Derbyshire Dales beyond, whatever the season. The village itself has everything for a self-catering stay within five minutes’ walk: a shop, post office, bakery and three pubs, with Bakewell’s famous Monday market just four miles further on.

Just along the street stands All Saints’ Church, a striking Norman building dating from the 1130s with a 15th-century tower reputedly the finest in Derbyshire, unmentioned in most guides to the village despite sitting at its very centre. Inside is a unique carved font, moved here from the church at Elton in 1838, its stoup supported by a carved salamander found nowhere else in England, alongside a small stone pilgrim figure said to have been carved by a travelling friar in exchange for hospitality, and an east window made at William Morris’s factory to a design by Edward Burne-Jones.

A short drive away lies Eyam, still known simply as the plague village. When the disease reached the village in 1665, the rector William Mompesson and his predecessor Thomas Stanley persuaded villagers to seal themselves inside its boundary rather than risk spreading the infection to Sheffield and Bakewell, holding open-air services at Cucklet Delf so the congregation could worship without gathering indoors. At the edge of the village, a boundary stone still marks where neighbouring parishes left food and supplies in exchange for coins left in running water or vinegar, an early act of care from those outside. It’s a sobering, remarkable story of pastoral courage, and Eyam’s church and museum tell it with real care.

Chatsworth and Haddon Hall, both within easy reach, offer a gentler kind of history. Chatsworth, seat of the Dukes of Devonshire for over 450 years, is often called the Palace of the Peak for its scale, art collection and celebrated formal gardens, with a working farmyard that appeals to younger visitors too. Haddon Hall, sometimes described as the Peak District’s sleeping beauty, is one of the best-preserved medieval and Tudor manor houses in England, largely untouched since the 17th century when the family moved away for over 200 years. Sudbury, Hardwick and Kedleston Halls sit a little further afield for those wanting more.

Between Bradford Dale and Lathkill Dale on the doorstep, and Dove Dale, Monsal Dale, Castleton’s show caverns and Buxton’s elegant spa gardens a short drive away, this is an easy base for walkers, cyclists and families alike, with disused-railway cycle trails and hire points nearby. Matlock’s industrial heritage and the Crich Tramway Museum make for an interesting wet-weather day, and Alton Towers is within reach for a livelier outing with older children. It’s a properly restful spot for a week away from the pressures of parish or working life.

How to get here: Best access is by car. Nearest train stations Matlock 5 miles, Chesterfield 13 miles, Buxton 13 miles, Sheffield 20 miles. Youlgreave has an hourly bus service to Bakewell which connects to the wider bus network.

Nearest Town: Bakewell 4 miles, Matlock 5 miles.

Facilities

Hopton Cottage is on the main street near the centre of Youlgreave village, set well back from the road. It is over 250 years old with stone mullions and leaded lights and has a modern kitchen and bathroom and gas central heating throughout. The cottage sleeps 5/6 people.

Entrance is through a small porch into a large kitchen/dining room. The kitchen has an electric cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The cosy living room has a log fire, TV and DVD player.

The bathroom with bath and shower is also downstairs.

Upstairs are 4 bedrooms, 3 having beautiful views over Bradford Dale. They are a double, a twin (with zip-link beds that convert to a king size), and a single. The 4th bedroom has a zed-bed and is more suitable for a young person due to limited headroom. A travel cot and a high chair are available.

WiFi is included. Bed linen and towels are provided.

For families there are games, puzzles and books to suit all ages.

There is a large south facing garden at the front of the house with garden furniture and off street parking by the front gate.

We are available all year round and have the Visit England ‘We’re Good To Go’ certificate showing that we comply with Government and Public Health England Covid secure guidelines.

Arrival and Departure times: Arrival from 4.00 pm. Departure by 10.00 am.

Booking Arrangements: Saturday changeover for weekly bookings in summer. Short breaks, weekends, flexible dates available the rest of the year.
