Southampton’s own history has a quietly fitting resonance for Christian visitors, too. It was from Southampton’s Town Quay, not Plymouth, that the Mayflower first set sail in August 1620, carrying the Pilgrim Fathers on the opening leg of their journey in search of religious freedom. Their sister ship, the Speedwell, developed a leak soon after, forcing a stop first at Dartmouth and then Plymouth before the Mayflower finally continued alone — a story still told at the Mayflower Memorial near the quay and at the SeaCity Museum in the Old Town. The city’s maritime story runs deeper still, from its medieval wool and wine trade to its role, three centuries later, as the departure point of the RMS Titanic in 1912.

For those wanting to venture further afield, the New Forest National Park begins just beyond the city’s western edge. Established in 2005 and covering around 220 square miles of ancient woodland and open heath, it’s famous for its free-roaming ponies and quiet walking trails, and makes an easy day trip by car. Southampton is also a working cross-Solent port, with regular ferries over to the Isle of Wight for anyone tempted by a longer excursion during their stay.
