This wonderful Christian holiday bungalow, Highlands, sits in the quiet village of Edderton in Easter Ross, with views across the Dornoch Firth to the striking Dornoch Bridge beyond. Edderton itself is a small village with a surprisingly deep and layered history. Just outside it stands the Clach Biorach — a three-metre standing stone first raised in the Bronze Age, later carved with Pictish symbols including a leaping salmon, some time between 500 and 700 AD. A second, later stone stands in the graveyard of Edderton’s Old Church: a cross-slab carved with a horseman beneath a cross, marking the point where this ancient landscape’s story turns Christian. During the summer months, an old Preacher’s Ark — a portable pulpit once used for open-air services — is also displayed in the churchyard.

For one of the finest views in this part of the Highlands, the Struie viewpoint is a short drive away — a lay-by high above the village, informally known locally as the Million Dollar View, looking straight down the length of the Dornoch Firth to the hills of Sutherland beyond. On a clear day it’s one of those views genuinely worth stopping the car for.

Just along the road in Tain lies one of Scotland’s most significant medieval pilgrimage sites. The shrine of St Duthac drew visitors from across the country for centuries, and King James IV made the journey north to pray there almost every year of his reign, right up until his final pilgrimage in August 1513, weeks before his death at Flodden. The remains of the medieval church still stand in the town today, alongside the newer parish church and museum that tell the fuller story of Duthac and the pilgrims who once travelled so far to reach him.

Edderton has its own distillery too, Balblair, which has been producing whisky here since at least 1790 and once featured in the film The Angel’s Share. It’s a quieter, more local alternative to the better-known Glenmorangie tour in Tain, and tours can usually be arranged with a little notice.

Dornoch, along the coast, has its own claim to fame beyond the beach. Golf has been recorded on its links since 1616, making it one of the oldest golfing grounds in the world, and the town gave the game one of its most influential figures: Donald Ross was born in Dornoch and started out as a greenkeeper and club professional there before emigrating to America, where he went on to design several hundred golf courses. The town’s 13th-century cathedral, restored after a fire in the 1500s, still stands at the heart of Dornoch today.
