Christian Holiday Chalet, Pembrokeshire — A Cosy Coastal Welcome Near Roch

Chalet Cwtch takes its name well: a Christian holiday chalet, Pembrokeshire, break built entirely around comfort and welcome. ‘Cwtch’ is the Welsh word for a cuddle or a small, cosy, sheltering place, with no direct English equivalent, and this cosy five-bed, self-catering chalet on The Woodlands site near Roch lives up to it. Set among communal landscaped gardens on the west Pembrokeshire coast, it’s an easy, comfortable base for couples or families exploring the wider Christian holidays in Wales, with allocated parking, rural views and a stash of toys and games on hand for younger guests. It’s a genuinely restful spot for anyone coming off the back of a demanding season of ministry or church life.

The village of Roch itself takes its name from the Norman French for ‘rock’ — la Roche — after the dramatic outcrop on which Roch Castle stands. Built around 1195 by the Norman knight Adam de Rupe, the castle marks the Landsker Line, the old boundary between English-speaking ‘Little England beyond Wales’ to the south and Welsh-speaking Pembrokeshire to the north, with sweeping views over St Brides Bay. It has one more claim to fame: Lucy Walter, born to the family who later owned the castle, became the mother of the Duke of Monmouth by King Charles II.

For guests seeking something more contemplative, Ffald-y-Brenin — Welsh for ‘Sheepfold of the King’ — lies around 25 miles further into Pembrokeshire, in the Preseli Hills above the Gwaun Valley. Developed from an old farmstead as a retreat centre some 40 years ago, this Christian house of prayer became known worldwide through Roy Godwin’s book The Grace Outpouring, and ancient pilgrim routes to St Davids still pass nearby. Whether or not a visit fits the itinerary, it’s a reminder of how deeply this part of Wales is woven into Christian history and pilgrimage, a fitting backdrop for a break built around rest.

That pilgrimage history centres on St Davids, Britain’s smallest city, just nine miles from Chalet Cwtch. Built on the site of the 6th-century monastery founded by St David, Wales’ patron saint, its 12th-century cathedral was once considered so significant that two pilgrimages there were held equal to one to Rome. Across the river stand the ruins of the medieval Bishop’s Palace, once one of the grandest bishop’s residences in Britain. The tiny city, no larger than a village, sits within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Britain’s only fully coastal national park, established in 1952 and home to the 186-mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

Closer to home, Newgale Sands, Nolton Haven and Broad Haven are all within five miles for surfing, rock pooling and family beach days, with Solva and St Davids offering plenty of choice for eating out. For a change of pace, Pembroke, Manorbier and Picton Castles are all within reach, and Folly Farm and the Blue Lagoon indoor pool at Bluestone give younger visitors somewhere to burn off energy on a wet day. The owners offer a discount for paid Christian workers, 20 percent in term time, and up to 30 percent for longer sabbatical stays, a practical option for anyone wanting genuine time away with Ffald-y-Brenin or St Davids close at hand.

Chalet Cwtch is isolated in beautiful country surroundings away from main roads so it is best to drive by car here and also for visits to surrounding sights. Saying this there is a Train Station at Haverfordwest (7 miles away) and the Airport at Cardiff (90 miles away)

Chalet Cwtch is located in The Woodlands site, Roch, on the West Pembrokeshire coast, West Wales. Our nearest beaches are Newgale Sands and Nolton Haven just 3 miles away, BroadHaven (5 miles). If you want a mooch in a pretty village then we recommend Solva (7 miles) and the small cathedral city of St. Davids (9 miles).

Facilities

Chalet Cwtch is a cosy 5 bed self-catering holiday home. It’s set in a tranquil sheltered position and is ideal for couples or families. The chalet is surrounded by communal landscaped gardens (children bring your bikes and scooters, and feel free to borrow from our indoor and outside toys/DVD’s/game equipment). It can easily accommodate a family with 2 good size bedrooms and open plan kitchen and lounge diner. There is allocated parking and great rural and woodland views.

There is an additional £60 cleaning and laundry fee required per holiday let (based on double bed – each additional single bed will be £5/stay)

We are happy to provide discounts for any paid Christian workers – Please send as an email to arrange this and ask what is possible.

We will provide 20% in school termtime and 10% during the school holidays.

We are also happy to negotiate up 30% for stays longer than 2 weeks, say for sabbaticals (we’re close to Ffald y Brenin retreat centre).

Energy Provision: The fees are inclusive of Electricity.

Availability

Chalet Cwtch is open from April through to October.

Arrival and Departure times: Please arrive after 3.00 pm and checkout before 10.00 am (however can be flexible if pre-arranged).

Booking Arrangements: Weekly lets run Saturday to Saturday. But out of high season we allow for 2-3 night Weekend breaks (other days and durations may be available upon request).

Pets: Unfortunately The Woodlands site don’t allow guests to bring pets.
